Islamabad set to host Lok Mela 2025

ISLAMABAD: The federal capital is once again glowing with the vibrant hues, melodies, and spirit of Pakistan’s diverse culture as preparations for Lok Mela 2025 reach their final stage.

Lok Virsa has once again transformed into a lively hub of creativity and tradition.

Artisans are giving final touches to their stalls, musicians are tuning their instruments, and the aroma of traditional food is already filling the air — all signaling the grand opening of the country’s largest folk festival. Organized by the National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa) under the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture Division, the ten-day event will be held from November 7 to 16, transforming Islamabad into a showcase of Pakistan’s cultural diversity.

This year’s theme, “Pakistan’s Colors, Crafts, and Culture — All in One Place,” reflects the nation’s rich blend of regional traditions and communities. Provincial pavilions representing Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are being decorated to highlight their unique identities. Craftsmen are busy preparing displays of embroidery, mirror work, pottery, and jewelry.

From Chiniot’s woodcarvers and Sindh’s Ajrak makers to Baloch women artisans, all are ready to showcase Pakistan’s traditional craftsmanship to thousands of visitors. This year’s international pavilion has been expanded, featuring nearly a dozen foreign countries presenting their folk art and cultural performances alongside Pakistani artists. Flags of friendly nations are already waving across the venue, enhancing the festival’s global appeal. Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khichi, said Lok Mela symbolizes Pakistan’s creative strength and soft power.

“It is not merely a festival. It’s the heartbeat of our national identity,” he stated. “When craftsmen, musicians, and storytellers come together, they remind the world that Pakistan’s culture is its greatest pride and unifying force.” The festival evenings will dazzle with folk music from across the provinces.

The opening day on November 7 will feature a grand ceremony followed by a Qawwali Night. On November 8, the Balochistan Night will highlight regional dances and tunes, followed by Punjab Night on November 9, where bhangra and folk songs will fill the air. A special Dhol Mela will be held on November 10 to pay tribute to Pakistan’s traditional rhythms.

The following evenings will celebrate the cultures of Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The festival will conclude on November 16 with a musical night and a grand closing ceremony. Lok Virsa’s Executive Director, Dr. Muhammad Waqas Saleem, said Lok Mela has, since 1981, stood as a symbol of Pakistan’s cultural continuity and resilience.

“It’s a place where artisans narrate stories through their crafts, songs, and traditions,” he added. The venue is being adorned with traditional designs, regional flags, and artistic decorations, while the food court is preparing to serve local favorites like chapli kebab, haleem, biryani, and jalebi. Enhanced security measures, crowd management, and family-friendly facilities are being ensured to make the event enjoyable for all visitors.

As final preparations near completion, the illuminated pavilions, intricate handicrafts, and rhythmic drum beats have brought Islamabad to life. In just a few days, the city will transform into a canvas of color, music, and smiles as Lok Mela 2025 showcases Pakistan’s unity, craftsmanship, and timeless cultural heritage.
