Germany’s EU Blue Card programme offers skilled and highly qualified Pakistanis an opportunity to work in the country and eventually apply for permanent residency.
The Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (Pakistan) has issued guidelines about the programme for highly educated, skilled and professional workers seeking employment in Germany.
The EU Blue Card is a special residence permit designed to attract qualified professionals and help meet Germany’s demand for skilled workers.
Who can apply?
Applicants must have a recognised German university degree or an equivalent foreign qualification.
A Master Craftsman qualification or vocational education and training at an equivalent European qualification level may also be accepted.
IT professionals can qualify even without a formal university degree. They must have at least three years of relevant professional experience during the past seven years and a suitable job offer in Germany.
Applicants must have a job offer in their relevant field for at least six months.
Salary expectation
For 2026, the minimum gross annual salary requirement is €50,700.
A lower salary threshold of €45,934.20 applies to shortage occupations and certain other eligible categories.
This lower threshold also applies to new graduates who completed their studies within the past three years. In some cases, approval from Germany’s Federal Employment Agency may be required.
How long is the EU Blue Card valid?
The EU Blue Card is generally issued for the duration of the employment contract, plus three additional months.
It can be issued for up to four years and may be extended if the applicant continues to meet the requirements.
Permanent residency
EU Blue Card holders can apply for permanent residency in Germany after 27 months if they have basic German language skills at A1 level.
The period can be reduced to 21 months for those with German language skills at B1 level.
Family benefits
EU Blue Card holders may also be able to bring their family members to Germany under family reunification rules.
