U.S. President Donald Trump has clarified what the United States is seeking from Iran in the ongoing Islamabad talks.
In an interview with PBS News, he stated that the U.S. wants only one thing from Iran: a firm commitment that it will not possess nuclear weapons.
According to reports, the second round of U.S.-Iran negotiations is expected to begin on Wednesday.
Trump also warned that if a deal is not reached before the deadline, there will be no extension in the ceasefire, nor will the naval blockade against Iran be lifted.
He further stated that if no agreement is reached, the situation could escalate into war. He emphasized that he is not in a hurry to make a bad deal and prefers a strong agreement.
When asked what would happen if the ceasefire expires, Trump responded that “many bombs will start going off,” indicating a serious escalation.
On the question of Iran’s participation, he said Iran should be present at the talks, adding that there had been an understanding for participation, though Iran has denied it.
Responding to a question about Jared Kushner, Trump said Kushner is no longer involved in business with Saudi Arabia and described him as a capable negotiator focused on ensuring Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons.
Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is the only objective of the talks, adding that he has sent his “A-team” for negotiations.
He also claimed that if tensions with Iran are resolved, global oil prices could drop significantly, provided Iran takes the necessary steps.
