Web Desk: The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named six small vehicles as its highest-rated safety performers for the 2026 model year, with the Toyota Prius emerging as the only Toyota model to earn the organization’s Top Safety Pick+ designation.

The latest ratings underscore the growing emphasis on crash protection and advanced driver-assistance systems as consumers increasingly weigh safety alongside affordability and fuel efficiency.

Among the six vehicles receiving the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, the Toyota Prius four-door hatchback is the only Toyota model to qualify, while popular models such as the Toyota Corolla did not make the list.

The remaining winners include the Kia K4 four-door sedan, Nissan Sentra four-door sedan, Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid four-door wagon, Mazda3 four-door sedan, and Mazda3 four-door hatchback.

All of the vehicles are 2026 model-year entries.

The IIHS awarded its highest safety honor in the small-car category to the following vehicles:

• Toyota Prius four-door hatchback
• Kia K4 four-door sedan
• Nissan Sentra four-door sedan
• Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid four-door wagon
• Mazda3 four-door sedan
• Mazda3 four-door hatchback

To receive the Top Safety Pick+ designation, vehicles must achieve strong performance across multiple crashworthiness and crash-avoidance evaluations.

Specifically, qualifying models must post high ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side-impact crash tests. They also must feature effective pedestrian front crash prevention and vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention systems, while their headlights must receive either a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating.

The IIHS has issued Top Safety Pick awards since 2013 to identify the safest vehicles within their respective size categories.

Several of this year’s winners also earned Top Safety Pick+ recognition for the previous model year, reflecting consistent safety performance.

Repeat recipients include the Kia K4, Toyota Prius, Mazda3 sedan, and Mazda3 hatchback.

In addition, Consumer Reports praised the Toyota Prius in its road testing, citing its stable handling through tight corners and a suite of standard safety technologies, including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and lane-keeping assistance.

Despite advances in small-vehicle safety, the IIHS noted that larger and heavier vehicles generally provide greater protection in serious crashes because they have more space to absorb impact energy before it reaches occupants.

However, modern SUVs and pickup trucks have evolved significantly. Automakers have redesigned many larger vehicles so their front structures better align with the crumple zones of smaller cars, reducing the likelihood of overriding smaller vehicles during collisions.

At the same time, researchers say adding extra weight to an already large vehicle offers little additional protection for its occupants.

The 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards highlight continued improvements in small-vehicle safety, with six models meeting the institute’s most demanding crashworthiness and crash-prevention standards. While larger vehicles generally retain an advantage in occupant protection during severe crashes, the latest ratings demonstrate that today’s best-performing small cars offer increasingly robust safety features and crash performance.
