Web Desk: An artificially altered video circulating on social media has falsely portrayed Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar as accusing the United States of backing a digital propaganda network, while his original remarks referred to India, according to the minister’s recorded press conference and official sources.
The manipulated clip emerged on the social media platform X, where an Indian user identified as Major Rajpal Singh claimed Tarar had alleged that Pakistan’s security agencies uncovered a US-supported digital network using bot farms and American payment systems to spread propaganda against Pakistan, its armed forces and state institutions.
The post also suggested that social media content related to Azad Jammu and Kashmir was being used as part of an organized information campaign to shape public opinion.
The edited video altered Tarar’s remarks to create the impression that he blamed the United States for supporting an online influence operation targeting Pakistan.
The clip circulated alongside claims that Pakistan had accused Washington of financing digital propaganda through coordinated online networks.
The claim is false.
A review of Tarar’s original press conference shows that he referred to India, not the United States, while discussing alleged digital propaganda activities.
According to sources familiar with the matter, artificial intelligence technology was used to digitally modify the minister’s statement by replacing references to India with references to the United States.
As a result, the altered video misrepresented the minister’s original remarks and created a misleading impression that Pakistan had publicly accused Washington of orchestrating the alleged campaign.
The altered clip appeared designed to distort the minister’s position and potentially create confusion about Pakistan’s diplomatic relations with the United States.
Experts have increasingly warned that AI-generated deepfakes, including manipulated videos and audio recordings, are becoming a significant tool for spreading misinformation, particularly during politically sensitive events.
Consequently, they advise users to verify viral claims through authentic and official sources before accepting or sharing them.
