Web desk: The United Kingdom will enforce new travel rules on Wednesday 25 February 2026. Dual nationals must carry a valid British passport. Authorities may refuse entry to those who fail to present one even if they hold British citizenship.
Travelers without a British passport must secure permission before arrival. They must obtain a visa an Electronic Travel Authorization known as ETA or a Certificate of Entitlement. These documents prove their right to enter the country. Airlines ferry operators and rail services may deny boarding to passengers who lack proper documents. The government urges all travelers to prepare complete paperwork before departure.
From 25 February 2026 citizens of 85 countries including the United States Canada and France must obtain an ETA before traveling to the United Kingdom. This rule applies even to travelers who previously entered without a visa.
The government considers this policy a major step toward a fully digital immigration system. Officials expect it to support a contactless border process in the future.
Authorities launched the ETA system in October 2023. Since then more than 13.3 million travelers have submitted successful applications. The system now forms a central part of entry procedures. It also applies to passengers who arrive on connecting flights and pass through passport control.
UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp said the ETA strengthens border security. He stated that the system helps officials stop individuals who may threaten the country. He also said the digital process creates a smoother experience for millions of visitors each year.
Travelers can apply through the official UK ETA mobile app. The application fee costs 16 pounds. The government says the price remains competitive compared to similar programs worldwide. Most applicants receive decisions within minutes. Officials advise travelers to apply at least three working days in advance in case extra checks become necessary.
British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA. This exemption also applies to dual nationals. However the government strongly advises dual British citizens to travel with a valid British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement from 25 February 2026. Carrying these documents helps prevent delays or boarding refusals.
The Home Office has advised dual nationals since October 2024 to maintain proper documentation. Officials have promoted awareness of ETA changes since 2023. A government spokesperson said transport companies cannot confirm citizenship without a British passport or Certificate of Entitlement. This situation can cause delays or prevent boarding.
