Web Desk: Punjab’s senior provincial minister, Marriyum Aurangzeb, announced on Tuesday that the province disposed of more than 376,000 tons of animal waste during Eid al-Adha and will award each worker involved in the “Suthra Punjab” cleanliness campaign a cash bonus of Rs10,000.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Zeeshan Rafique in Lahore, Aurangzeb praised sanitation teams for what she described as an exemplary cleanup operation conducted across the province during the religious festival.
Aurangzeb said authorities deployed drones and modern monitoring technology for the first time to oversee sanitation activities and ensure timely waste collection and disposal.
She added that more than 184,000 sanitation workers participated in the operation, while authorities also monitored and cleaned livestock markets established for Eid sacrifices.
“The cleanliness campaign delivered outstanding results and became a top-trending topic on social media across Pakistan,” Aurangzeb said.
In recognition of their efforts, the Punjab government will provide a Rs10,000 bonus to every worker who participated in the campaign under the Suthra Punjab initiative.
The minister credited the program’s performance to the administrative system introduced by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, describing it as a flagship governance project.
Aurangzeb also disclosed that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz underwent surgery on Eid day but continued monitoring the province-wide sanitation operation during her recovery.
According to the minister, Maryam Nawaz’s first concern after leaving intensive care was the public’s welfare and the effectiveness of the cleanliness campaign.
She said the chief minister’s surgery was successful and confirmed that Maryam Nawaz has recovered well. Aurangzeb also dismissed speculation that the chief minister would travel abroad for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Aurangzeb said residents of other provinces should benefit from similar sanitation standards and urged provincial governments to adopt successful practices where applicable.
She specifically highlighted the need for improved municipal services in Karachi and encouraged inter-provincial cooperation on public service delivery.
Looking ahead, she said the Punjab government has directed the Local Government Department to establish slaughterhouses at the union council level before next year’s Eid al-Adha to further improve waste m
