Following Portugal’s disappointing performance in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo has come under intense criticism.
The 41-year-old Ronaldo failed to display his trademark form in the match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, prompting critics to question his place in the team.
At the same time, Indian cricketer Virat Kohli’s past remarks about Ronaldo have once again become the center of attention in international media.
Virat Kohli had said in 2023 that experts who write Ronaldo off prematurely are proven wrong every time because Ronaldo continues to prove himself even in difficult circumstances.
According to international media reports, although Ronaldo is no longer at the peak of his career, he scored 28 goals in 30 matches for Al Nassr FC during the 2025–26 season.
Sports analysts say the issue is not Cristiano Ronaldo’s ability but rather a lack of cohesion between him and the national team.
After Portugal’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup, Kohli had also described Ronaldo as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, saying that no trophy or accolade could diminish his achievements and abilities.
International media reports suggest that while questions are being raised about Ronaldo’s future, fans remain hopeful that, given his hard work, determination, and ability to bounce back, he will once again silence his critics in the upcoming World Cup matches.
