Web Desk: Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) warned that a severe heatwave is likely to affect large parts of the country during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha holidays, with temperatures expected to remain significantly above normal from May 25 to May 31.
The Met Office said a high-pressure system is expected to develop on May 25 and intensify further by May 26, triggering widespread moderate to severe heatwave conditions across much of the country.
According to the advisory, Sindh will likely face the most extreme conditions, with temperatures expected to rise between 47°C and 50°C in several districts.
Karachi is also expected to experience hot weather, with maximum temperatures ranging between 35°C and 38°C during the forecast period.
Meanwhile, southern and central districts including Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and others may also see temperatures soaring up to 50°C.
In Punjab and central regions, the PMD said daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 42°C and 45°C, which is 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal levels.
The advisory added that northern regions, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Swat and surrounding districts, will also experience unusually high temperatures ranging from 38°C to 45°C.
In addition, Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Hazara and Malakand divisions are expected to record temperatures above seasonal averages, while nighttime temperatures will also remain elevated.
However, the PMD warned that the prolonged heatwave could pose serious health risks, particularly for children, women and the elderly.
It advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and urged outdoor workers to take precautionary measures.
