Drainages overflow as heavy rain lashes Islamabad, Rawalpindi

Heavy rain in Islamabad and Rawalpindi has caused water to accumulate in low-lying areas, while intermittent showers continue across the twin cities.

The rain has brought relief from the heat and made the weather pleasant. However, poor drainage in urban areas has disrupted routine activities.

According to the Meteorological Department, rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in Islamabad, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and different parts of Potohar.

Some areas of Potohar may also receive heavy rain and hail.

Significant rainfall was recorded in several parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. According to available data, Saidpur received 15mm of rain, Golra 36mm and Bokra 42mm.

Similarly, 34mm was recorded in Pirwadhai, 36mm in New Katarian and 35mm in Shamsabad.

Rainwater accumulated in low-lying areas of Rawalpindi, making it difficult for residents to travel on some roads and streets.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi has maintained a high alert. Staff and heavy machinery have been deployed at various locations.

According to WASA officials, teams are stationed around Nullah Lai and other low-lying areas. Water levels and the condition of storm drains are being monitored continuously.

Heavy machinery has also been kept on standby to deal with any emergency and ensure timely drainage.

Rawalpindi’s Nullah Lai and connected storm drains remain a major concern. During heavy monsoon rains this season, water levels in Nullah Lai have risen dangerously.

The administration, WASA, Rescue 1122 and other departments have previously been placed on high alert during periods of intense rainfall.

In Islamabad, the risk of water accumulation in low-lying areas also remains. Authorities have advised citizens to stay away from storm drains, streams and areas prone to waterlogging.

Residents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
