ISLAMABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Monday approved a 14-day physical remand of the accused involved in assaulting traffic police personnel in Islamabad’s Sector I-8.

ATC Judge Abu al-Hasanat Muhammad Zulqarnain took up the case for hearing. During the hearing, the accused was produced before the court and police requested it to grant a 30-day physical remand for further investigation.

However, the court granted a 14-day remand and handed the suspect over to the police for interrogation.

Background

The accused was arrested late Saturday after allegedly assaulting on-duty traffic officers in I-8 Markaz. Police said the incident began when the suspect engaged in a heated argument with traffic personnel, which soon turned violent, disrupting traffic and alarming nearby pedestrians.

A video of the altercation, now widely circulated on social media, shows the suspect verbally abusing and misbehaving with officers before speeding away in his car. Several bystanders captured the confrontation on their mobile phones.

The footage sparked widespread outrage online, with many demanding strict legal action against the culprit.

According to police officials, the suspect was later apprehended and taken to the I-9 Police Station, while his car was seized. Authorities said an investigation is underway. Similar cases of aggression against police have been reported in the past. Last year, Karachi police arrested two men accused of assaulting officers during a scuffle in the Korangi area, with a case filed for attacking law enforcement personnel.
