US president Donald Trump cancels strikes on Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to scale back Israel’s strikes in Lebanon in order to support ongoing negotiations with Iran, according to multiple news sources.

Israel’s recent military actions in Lebanon risked derailing the negotiations. Tehran was reportedly “on the verge” of responding militarily to the violations, which could have led to a major escalation in the region. Pakistan’s diplomatic channels reportedly played a key role in preventing immediate retaliation.

Pakistan has been actively mediating between all parties involved, including Iran and US, and has hosted delegations from both sides to facilitate dialogue. Islamabad’s last-minute intervention helped calm tensions and allowed negotiations to continue, according to officials familiar with the talks.

The ceasefire, while currently holding, remains delicate. Leaders from all sides have emphasized the importance of patience and restraint, acknowledging the critical role Pakistan has played in encouraging dialogue and preventing escalation.

Recent airstrikes in Lebanon were condemned for undermining the fragile peace, underscoring the need for continued diplomatic intervention.

U.S. officials lauded Pakistan’s efforts as a stabilizing factor in the region. Pakistan has continuously offered its mediation services to maintain calm, support ceasefire enforcement, and promote sustainable peace through dialogue, hosting multiple rounds of talks in Islamabad with Iranian and U.S. delegations.

Intrenational relations experts believe that Pakistan’s active engagement demonstrates its growing influence as a regional mediator.

By bringing conflicting parties to table talks, Islamabad has helped prevent a potential military confrontation, highlighting the country’s commitment to regional stability and its role in supporting ongoing Iran negotiations alongside international actors.
