Islamabad: Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has shared his views on team selection, for the upcoming World Cup, and the development of domestic cricket, emphasizing experience is not the primary need for the national squad.
Team doesn’t need more experience
Afridi said the World Cup is approaching fast, and the focus should be on team cohesion rather than adding more experienced players. “The combination for the World Cup must have been finalized till now. The captain should be given a complete team so he knows he is leading a defined squad,” he added.
Support for accountability and the army
Shahid Afridi also expressed approval for ongoing accountability in the military, including high-ranking officers. “I am happy that General Faiz and others are being held accountable. The army has started to hold itself accountable. The army is ours; it sacrifices so that our children do not suffer. I feel proud that it protects our youth while sacrificing its own,” he said.
PSL and domestic cricket recommendations
Afridi called for a PSL roadshow, saying the league is a major brand and franchises should organize events to promote it. He also suggested expanding PSL teams to provide more opportunities for players.
In addition, Afridi emphasized the importance of departmental cricket, noting he had personally played at that level. “Departmental cricket should exist. It helps discover talent and sustain the game,” he said.
Big Bash experience a boost for World Cup
Commenting on international exposure, Afridi welcomed Pakistani players participating in Australia’s Big Bash League. “It is a positive development. Players like Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen will gain experience there, which will help the team in the World Cup,” he said.
