Strong earthquake hits Dhaka Friday morning

DHAKA: A 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Dhaka on Friday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), with the quake’s epicenter located about 10 km (6 miles) underground.

The tremors were also felt in India’s eastern states bordering Bangladesh, but authorities reported no immediate major damage in either country.

The United States Geological Survey identified the epicenter near the city of Narsingdi, roughly 40 km (25 miles) east of Dhaka, the capital. In Dhaka, residents hurried out of their homes as buildings swayed and some temporary structures collapsed.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this before. We were in the office when everything started shaking. We ran down the stairs and joined others on the street,” said Sadman Sakib, an employee at a private firm, speaking to a foreign news outlet.

Local media showed images of people carrying children and assisting elderly residents as panic spread. Reports indicated that the tremors were felt in Chandpur, Nilphamari, Sitakunda, Sirajganj, Narayanganj, Patuakhali, Bogura, Barisal, and Moulvibazar.
