Web Desk: Security sources said on Wednesday that the country’s air defence systems intercepted and brought down eight drones that entered Pakistan’s airspace from Afghanistan.
According to the sources, four of the drones were shot down in mountainous areas near Kohat, while the remaining four were brought down in high-altitude areas around the Torkham border crossing.
The sources said the incident occurred in the morning and that the drones were believed to have been directed toward Pakistan’s territory.
Pakistan’s security sources said the armed forces and air force prevented what they described as an attempt to target civilian areas. They credited the country’s air defence network with detecting and intercepting all eight drones.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions along Pakistan’s northwestern border with Afghanistan, where authorities have repeatedly raised concerns about cross-border security threats.
The security sources also linked Wednesday’s reported drone incident to overnight fighting in the Kurram sector.
They said security forces responded to what they described as unprovoked firing from Afghan Taliban positions by targeting and destroying several posts in the area.
Pakistan’s military has maintained that its forces remain on alert to protect the country’s territory and respond to cross-border threats.
The latest claims come amid continuing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with security and border incidents adding to already strained relations between the two countries.
