What is Basant?

Basant is a festival that marks the arrival of warmer days and a sense of renewal. It is a lively spring festival celebrated in Pakistan, especially in Lahore. The festival is recognized by its colorful kite-flying. Usually friends and families gather on rooftops to fly kites. Soon the sky gets filled with blue, yellow and pink kites. The atmosphere feels energetic and joyful. The kites are engaged in friendly battles where each participant tries to down other participant kites.

Food stalls, traditional music and late night rooftops make the festival feel magical. However, in recent time many accidents have taken place some of them resulting in deaths which have led to people being disheartened by the festival.
