Lahore: In a historic first, Punjab government has launched the use of high-tech anti-smog guns to tackle worsening air pollution, following directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

As part of the government’s broader anti-smog initiative, the formal deployment of anti-smog guns began in various parts of Lahore. These devices utilize advanced technology to spray a fine mist of water droplets into the atmosphere, helping to suppress airborne dust and pollution particles.

The initiative also incorporates artificial intelligence-based weather monitoring systems to assess the effectiveness of the equipment in real-time. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the provision of modern machinery alongside other anti-smog measures across the province.

“This advanced technology will play a vital role in improving air quality, reducing smog-related illnesses, and supporting long-term environmental health,” an official statement said.

Currently, 15 anti-smog guns have been developed locally and are now in operation, with five more units in the final stages of production. Each unit is connected to a water purification system and a 16,000-liter water tank. The anti-smog gun can disperse water mist up to a distance of 100 meters.

Used in other heavily polluted countries such as China and India, this technology is designed to reduce the concentration of particulate matter in the air. Officials say the system will also aid in controlling respiratory and lung-related diseases that surge during smog season.

The rollout marks a major milestone in Punjab’s environmental strategy and aligns with the chief minister’s vision to leverage modern technology for public health and climate resilience.

Pakistan China collaborate to Combat Smog

In another development towards strengthening environmental cooperation under the China-Pakistan partnership, leading scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Pakistani universities have agreed to expand collaboration in research, technology, and policy development to combat smog and air pollution across Pakistan.

A delegation from CAS held an extensive meeting with Dr. Saddam Hussain, Vice Chairman and Dean of the Confucius Institute, to explore avenues of scientific and academic cooperation focusing on air quality management, environmental monitoring, and sustainable urban planning.
