The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert over rainfall and possible flooding in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to the NDMA, a new spell of rain is expected in the upper catchment areas of rivers in Punjab and Balochistan. Flash flooding is possible in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur over the next 24 to 48 hours, while several districts of Punjab face a moderate risk of flash floods.
In Balochistan, areas including Zhob, Sherani, Musakhel and Kohlu are also at risk of flash flooding. Rain-related flooding is also possible in Barkhan, Loralai, Duki and Dera Bugti.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, flooding is feared in the Swat and Panjkora rivers in Chitral, Swat and Upper Dir. Heavy rain has also been forecast for Khyber, Orakzai, Hangu and Karak, while streams in Tank, North Waziristan and South Waziristan could experience flooding.
A moderate risk of flash floods has been identified in streams across Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar and Gilgit in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The NDMA has urged relevant authorities and citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures.
It is worth noting that recently Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir visited the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) established at the headquarters of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where he was given a detailed briefing on preparations to deal with natural disasters and coordinated response arrangements during the ongoing monsoon season in the country.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Chairman NDMA briefed Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir on the operational capabilities of the National Emergencies Operation Centre, its technology-based response systems, and mechanisms for monitoring disasters. During the briefing, an overview was also presented of the monitoring system for the prevailing monsoon situation and various potential threats through “Disaster Lens 2026.”
