Web Desk: Meteorological Department has forecast the onset of the monsoon season from July 1, with rain expected to begin in the country’s northern regions, northeastern Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while southern Sindh is likely to remain dry for at least another week.

Meteorological Department spokesperson Anjum Nazir said the first monsoon system is expected to enter the country through northeastern Punjab and Kashmir, bringing rainfall to northern Pakistan and adjoining areas from the start of July.

According to the forecast, widespread monsoon activity is expected to develop across northern parts of the country as moisture-laden weather systems move into the region.

However, the department said the current weather pattern does not indicate an immediate onset of the monsoon in Sindh. Rainfall is not expected across the province until at least July 5.

Looking ahead, the spokesperson said a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal could eventually influence weather conditions over Sindh, including Karachi, and may bring rainfall later in the season.

Even so, forecasters expect Karachi and much of Sindh to receive below-average rainfall during this year’s monsoon.

The Meteorological Department also noted that neighboring India recorded rainfall about 43% below normal during June, highlighting weaker-than-usual early monsoon activity across parts of the region.

Pakistan’s summer monsoon typically lasts from July through September and plays a critical role in replenishing water resources and supporting agriculture. However, the season can also trigger flash floods, urban flooding and landslides, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
