Web Desk: An explosion at a mosque inside the Police Lines area of Kohat during Friday prayers killed 21 people and injured 103 others, according to an initial incident report submitted to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health secretary.
The explosion occurred at about 1:20 p.m. at the mosque on Hangu Road, according to the report prepared by the District Health Officer and sent to the provincial health department.
The report said the blast was followed by an attack involving an estimated five to seven terrorists.
Of the 21 people killed, 15 were police personnel and six were civilians, the report said.
Among the civilians killed was Dr. Israel Khan Orakzai, chief district specialist in pediatrics at Liaquat Memorial Hospital in Kohat.
Following the attack, 103 injured people were brought to hospitals for treatment, according to the preliminary report.
Liaquat Memorial Hospital received 13 injured people, while 90 were taken to District Headquarters Hospital Kohat.
The casualties included 73 police personnel and 30 civilians.
Meanwhile, 34 injured people were admitted for further treatment, the report said.
Doctors performed laparotomy procedures on five patients suffering abdominal injuries. Four of those patients were later transferred to tertiary-care hospitals in Peshawar for specialised treatment.
Health authorities said medical teams were continuing to monitor the condition of the injured and provide treatment at the designated medical facilities.
The preliminary figures could be revised as authorities continue to assess the casualties and circumstances surrounding the attack.
