Creating a Selfie Video is simple: just look at your device’s camera and follow the instructions by making a few brief head movements so that a video can be recorded from different angles.If you later have trouble signing in, you only need to record a new Selfie Video. The new recording is compared with the previously saved video to verify that the person attempting to access the account is the legitimate user, helping restore access to the account.
Built with Privacy and Security in Mind
The new sign-in method has been designed with privacy and security as top priorities.A user’s Selfie Video remains their property and under their full control. It is recorded with their consent and stored securely. Users can delete it from their Google account at any time. The video is used only to assist with sign-in unless a user gives permission for it to be shared for additional purposes. Even when not in use, the Selfie Video remains encrypted while stored.
Multiple Layers of Security Against Fraud
When users sign in with Selfie Video, Google uses multiple layers of security to protect against spoofing attempts, such as fake photos and videos, including deepfakes. For example, Google compares the new video with the previously stored Selfie Video and asks users to perform a few simple movements to confirm that the video is being recorded in real time. In addition, Google uses its standard security measures to detect and block suspicious sign-in attempts.This new feature is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to provide secure and flexible sign-in options, alongside features such as Passkeys and Recovery Contacts.
