Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan has deregistered two political parties, bringing the total number of registered political parties down to 167. Additionally, four political parties are currently without a party head.

According to an official notification issued by the commission, the delisted parties include Pakistan Justice and Democratic Party, led by former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, and Istehkam Pakistan Tehreek.

The ECP stated that both parties were delisted due to violations of the Elections Act and relevant rules. These violations included failure to conduct intra-party elections and عدم submission of annual financial statements.

Despite being given multiple opportunities to comply, both parties failed to meet the legal requirements. The commission had already ordered their delisting on April 16 following recommendations from its Political Finance Wing.

As part of the action, the electoral symbols of both parties have also been withdrawn. The ECP has released an updated list of political parties, confirming that after the latest delistings, the total stands at 167, with four parties still lacking a formal leadership structure.

Furthermore, the ECP emphasized that strict compliance with legal and financial pre-requisites is essential for maintaining party registration. The commission reiterated that timely conduct of intra-party elections and submission of audited financial statements are mandatory under the law.
