Web Desk: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the relaunch and expansion of the province’s electric bike scheme, under which 100,000 electric motorcycles will be provided to students over the next year through interest-free installment plans aimed at making transportation more affordable and environmentally friendly.
The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to promote sustainable mobility while expanding access to electric vehicles for students and public sector employees.
Under the scheme, the Punjab government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 on each electric bike, significantly lowering the purchase cost.
Students will be required to make a down payment of Rs14,000 and then pay monthly interest-free installments of Rs2,100.
Female students will receive additional support, with the provincial government covering both the down payment and registration fee. They will only be required to pay the monthly installment of Rs2,100.
The government said the financing model is intended to make electric vehicles affordable for young people without imposing interest charges.
Who Is Eligible?
The scheme will be open to:
- Students enrolled in recognized educational institutions across Punjab.
- Punjab government employees, who will also be able to obtain electric bikes through easy installment plans under a separate category.
Officials said expanding eligibility is expected to encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles across the province.
How to Apply
The Punjab government has not yet announced the application schedule or opened registrations for the new phase of the scheme.
Once registrations begin, applications are expected to be submitted online through the provincial government’s designated portal, similar to the previous e-bike scheme.
Applicants should monitor official announcements from the Punjab government, the Transport and Mass Transit Department and, if designated again as the financing partner, the Bank of Punjab for registration details.
Applicants are expected to provide:
- CNIC or B-Form, where applicable.
- Student identity card and proof of enrollment.
- Punjab domicile.
- Mobile phone number and email address.
- Any additional documents specified by the government.
Alongside the e-bike initiative, Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to simultaneously introduce additional electric buses, electric taxis, electric motorcycles and electric three-wheelers as part of Punjab’s clean transport strategy.
She also announced plans to deploy 5,000 electric buses across the province over the next five years to improve public transportation while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
The provincial government said the broader program aims to modernise Punjab’s transport network, promote clean energy and lower commuting costs for residents.
