China has unveiled another remarkable breakthrough in artificial intelligence and robotics, introducing a technology that allows humans to control robots using only their thoughts—without any physical movement or brain surgery.
Experts say that if the system proves successful in real-world applications, it could bring revolutionary changes for people with disabilities, industrial operations, and the field of robotics.
The technology, called “Brain-to-Robot,” was demonstrated by Chinese company BrainCo during the World AI Conference 2026 in Shanghai. According to the company, the system does not require any implanted chip or brain surgery. Instead, users wear a lightweight headset that records the brain’s electrical activity through electroencephalography (EEG) signals.
Artificial intelligence-based software then analyses these EEG signals, interprets the user’s intentions, and instructs the robot to perform the desired action. For example, if a person simply imagines picking up a cup, the robotic arm interprets the signal and lifts the cup accordingly.
During a live demonstration at the conference, a robotic arm successfully picked up a cup using only brain signals, impressing attendees. BrainCo said the technology is not limited to robotic arms and can also be used to control humanoid robots and robotic dogs.
The company said the system is relatively easy to use. According to BrainCo, even researchers with no previous experience in brain-computer interfaces can learn to operate a robot with their thoughts after about 10 minutes of training.
The technology differs from the approach used by Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which requires surgical implantation of a chip into the brain. BrainCo’s system instead relies on an external headset to read brain signals, eliminating the need for surgery or implants.
Experts believe that if the technology proves reliable and effective in the future, people with physical disabilities could operate prosthetic limbs, robotic arms, or wheelchairs using only mental commands. It could also significantly improve human-machine interaction in industry, scientific research, and robotics.
BrainCo was founded in 2015 and is considered one of China’s rapidly emerging technology companies. It focuses on artificial intelligence, brain-computer interfaces, and robotics. However, the company’s claim that it has developed the world’s first integrated Brain-to-Robot system has not yet been independently verified.
Experts say the technology’s true capabilities, accuracy, and potential for large-scale adoption can only be assessed after further independent scientific testing and research.
