Dense fog and severe cold paralyze traffic across Punjab

LAHORE: The month of December has begun with harsh conditions of weather as intense cold and dense fog continue to affect large parts of Punjab that disrupting normal life and severely impacting travel. Thick fog reduced visibility to nearly zero at several locations, prompting authorities to close major motorways and highways to prevent accidents.

According to the Motorway Police, fog begins to intensify soon after nightfall, spreading across motorways and national highways in different parts of the province. In view of the serious threat to commuters’ safety, multiple sections of key motorways were closed to all types of traffic from late night onwards.

The motorways affected include M-2 from Lahore to Kot Momin, M-3 from Faizpur to Darkhana, M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, M-5 from Multan to Zahir Pir, and the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M-11). Several national highways also remained engulfed in dense fog, including areas of Manga Mandi, Phool Nagar, Jambar, Pattoki, Okara, Sahiwal, Chichawatni, Iqbal Nagar, and Mian Channu.

Motorway Police officials said that the closures were a precautionary measure aimed at preventing potential accidents during conditions of extremely low visibility. They officials said that the motorways would be reopened once weather conditions improve and visibility returns to safe levels.

The motorists have advised to avoid unnecessary travel during foggy hours, use fog lights, maintain safe distances, and stay updated with official traffic advisories. The foggy and cold spell is expected to persist over the coming days, urging citizens to take extra precautions while traveling.
