Web Desk: A Tejas fighter jet, India’s indigenous light combat aircraft, crashed during a demonstration at the Dubai Airshow 2025 on Friday, IAF say that it deeply regrets the loss of life. A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Officials confirmed that the aircraft, a 4.5-generation Tejas Mk‑1A, went down during a routine aerobatic maneuver. The pilot sustained fatal injuries.

Technical Specifications of Tejas

The Tejas, manufactured by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is a single-engine, multirole light fighter designed for high maneuverability and cost-effective operations. The aircraft features a delta-wing configuration, advanced avionics including an AESA radar, and a mix of aluminum-lithium alloys, titanium and composite materials. It has a maximum takeoff weight of roughly 13,500 kg and can reach speeds up to Mach 1.6.

HAL has produced several variants, including the Mk‑1, Mk‑1A and a trainer version, while the more advanced Tejas Mk‑2 is under development with upgraded sensors and a more powerful engine.

Market Impact

Following news of the crash, HAL’s stock experienced a sharp 3% decline in early trading hours, reflecting investor concerns about production delays and potential setbacks for the Tejas program. Analysts noted that the crash could impact both domestic orders and international export prospects, though HAL emphasized that the program remains on track.

Production and Strategic Significance

HAL is scaling up production to meet Indian Air Force requirements, aiming for 16–24 Mk‑1A jets annually by 2026. HAL is setting up new production lines, including a third facility in Nashik, to increase output.. The Tejas program is central to India’s push for indigenous defense technology and modernization of its air force, gradually replacing older jets like the MiG-21.

Conflict with Pakistan

During the Marka Haq operation, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) engaged Indian Air Force (IAF) jets, resulting in the destruction of multiple aircraft. The PAF claimed successful airstrikes while maintaining full operational control, showcasing advanced aerial capabilities.
