Web Desk: Security forces and armed individuals exchanged fire near the New Bus Terminal area of Rawalakot, leaving one paramilitary personnel dead and another injured, according to officials.
Authorities said the incident began when members of a proscribed group allegedly opened indiscriminate fire in a civilian area, prompting police and Rangers personnel to move in to restore order.
Officials claimed aerial surveillance detected the movement and activities of armed individuals before security forces responded.
According to security officials, police teams advanced toward the area after reports of gunfire near the bus terminal. They said officers came under fire from armed individuals, leading Rangers personnel to join the operation.
During the exchange, one Rangers soldier was killed and another sustained injuries, officials said.
Authorities also alleged that the armed group used explosives and heavy weapons, including attacks targeting a police armoured personnel carrier (APC) and surrounding areas.
Officials said the incident highlighted concerns over the presence of armed groups operating in and around Rawalakot, warning that allowing such elements to operate could threaten public safety.
The allegations against the group could not be independently verified immediately, and further details about casualties, arrests or the identities of those involved were not immediately available.
The clash comes after weeks of tensions in the region, with authorities accusing the group of attempting to advance a violent agenda.
Security officials said they were continuing operations in the area and working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
