Web Desk: PM Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday welcomed a decision by US President Donald Trump to pause “Project Freedom” in the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a timely step toward easing regional tensions.

PM Sharif said he was grateful for Trump’s “courageous leadership” and described the move as a constructive response to appeals from Pakistan and allied countries. In particular, he highlighted the role of Saudi Arabia and its leadership, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in urging restraint during a sensitive period.

Moreover, PM Sharif said the decision could help advance peace, stability and reconciliation in a region long shaped by strategic rivalries and security concerns.

At the same time, the prime minister reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to diplomatic solutions. He said Pakistan would continue to support efforts that promote restraint and encourage dialogue over conflict.

Consequently, PM Sharif expressed optimism that the pause could build momentum toward a broader agreement. He added that sustained engagement among regional and global stakeholders remains essential to securing long-term stability.

Meanwhile, PM Sharif voiced hope that ongoing diplomatic efforts would translate into a durable framework for peace in the Gulf and beyond. He emphasised that cooperation among partners would be critical to maintaining progress and preventing renewed escalation.

The statement reflects Pakistan’s broader approach of backing negotiated settlements while aligning with key regional allies to manage tensions in strategically vital waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz.
