Web Desk: Federal government has approved plans to construct two new underpasses in Islamabad as part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow and modernise the capital’s infrastructure, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Wednesday.
Chairing a meeting at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) headquarters, Naqvi reviewed ongoing and upcoming development projects and directed officials to begin work on the Kashmir Chowk and Faisal Mosque underpasses next month.
The proposed projects are aimed at reducing congestion on some of Islamabad’s busiest road corridors, where increasing traffic volumes have led to longer commute times in recent years.
“These projects are intended to improve public convenience and ensure smoother traffic flow in the capital,” Naqvi said during the meeting.
Beyond road infrastructure, the minister expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of a fully functional Emergency 1122 system in Islamabad and ordered authorities to accelerate the establishment of Capital Emergency Services.
He instructed officials to complete all legal formalities and immediately begin work on four new emergency response centres, calling for the initiative to be implemented on an urgent basis to strengthen the city’s emergency preparedness.
Meanwhile, the meeting also focused on improving the financial sustainability of the CDA. Officials reviewed proposals aimed at increasing the authority’s recurring revenue, with Naqvi directing the agency to develop a long-term revenue model to reduce reliance on external funding.
“A financially strong institution is just as important as development projects,” he said, urging officials to fast-track practical revenue-generating initiatives.
Naqvi also instructed the CDA to complete the Expressway Service Road project within its prescribed timeline, stressing that delays in key infrastructure schemes should be avoided.
The meeting concluded with a briefing on the progress of Islamabad’s ongoing mega development projects and future planning initiatives, as authorities seek to expand urban infrastructure and improve public services in Pakistan’s rapidly growing capital.
