High level flood warning issued for Sindh’s Guddu, Sukkur on September 4-5: PMD

Flood sindh Guddu Sukkur

WEBDESK: The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has warned that the Indus River at Guddu and Sukkur barrages is likely to reach a “very high” flood level between 4 and 5 September.

In its weekly outlook issued at noon, the FFD said “very high to exceptionally high” flood levels would continue in the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala and downstream, as well as in the Ravi River at Jassar and downstream.

The forecast added that nullahs linked to the Ravi and Chenab rivers could experience “high to very high” floods within the next 24 hours.

The FFD also warned that Trimmu Barrage on the Chenab River is expected to face an “exceptionally high” flood level on Friday evening.

It further said that the Chenab River at Panjnad, along with inflows from Balloki and Islam headworks, could rise to a “very high” flood level on 2 September.

Authorities have been alerted to monitor the situation closely as the risk of flooding remains severe in multiple rivers.

On te other hand the historic Kartarpur Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, one of the holiest sites in Sikhism, has been submerged in floodwater. The flooding occurred after India released hundreds of thousands of cusecs of water into rivers flowing towards Pakistan.

Floodwaters have submerged the entire Kartarpur area. Houses and farmland are under water.

Residents living near the rivers are being moved to safer places. Authorities have issued a red alert and warned people to stay away from riverbanks.
