Tremors felt in Swat, Malakand, Peshawar and Swabi

WEBDESK: Tremors were felt in Swat, Malakand, Peshawar and Swabi on Wednesday, causing panic among residents.

According to reports, the earthquake’s epicenter was located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were received.

Tremors from a moderate earthquake were felt across several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday, the National Seismic Monitoring Centre confirmed.

The quake, measuring 5.3 in magnitude, was recorded in Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, Swabi, and Mansehra, as well as adjoining areas. Shocks were also reported from Gahkuch city in Gilgit Baltistan’s Ghizer district.

According to the seismic centre, the epicentre was located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region. No casualties or damage were reported.

This is the latest in a series of quakes to strike northern Pakistan in recent months, most of them originating in the Hindu Kush belt.

Earlier in August, a 5.2 magnitude tremor had shaken Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar.

Pakistan lies on a major fault line where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence in the country’s northern areas.
