Web Desk: YouTube has begun rolling out its picture-in-picture (PiP) feature to all users on Android and iOS devices, allowing free-tier viewers to continue watching videos in a small floating window while using other apps.
The company confirmed that the feature, previously limited to Premium subscribers, will now become available globally to non-paying users over the coming months as part of a phased rollout.
Until now, PiP support on mobile required a Premium subscription, while web users already had access to similar multitasking functionality through browsers. With the latest update, mobile users can exit the app or switch to other tasks while videos continue playing in a resizable on-screen player.
Users can activate the feature by swiping up or pressing the home button during playback, after which the video shrinks into a floating window that remains visible over other apps.
However, YouTube noted that music-related content will remain restricted for free users in PiP mode. Premium subscribers will continue to have full access to all video types, including music content, in the background or PiP playback.
The company said the update aims to improve multitasking on mobile devices and enhance viewing flexibility for users worldwide.
