Pakistan launches second Indigenous EO-2 satellite

⏱ 2 minute read

Web desk: The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has announced the successful launch of Pakistan’s second indigenous Electro-Optical satellite EO-2 from Yangjiang Seashore Launch Centre in China. This achievement marks a significant step forward in Pakistan’s satellite development program and reflects the country’s growing expertise in space technology.

EO-2 was designed, engineered, and assembled in Pakistan at SUPARCO’s Satellite Research and Development Centre SRDC. Built entirely through in-house research and systems engineering, the satellite demonstrates Pakistan’s expanding capabilities in satellite design, payload integration, testing, and mission readiness.

The satellite is intended to operate alongside the previously launched EO-1, observing the Earth under varying lighting conditions. This coordinated operation allows more accurate monitoring of surface features and enhances the detection of changes over time. Together, EO-1 and EO-2 improve continuity and accuracy of Earth observation data for national applications.

The launch of EO-2 significantly strengthens Pakistan’s Earth observation capabilities by increasing the availability of reliable satellite data. The mission showcases SUPARCO’s commitment to applied research, development of skilled human resources, and the systematic expansion of indigenous space infrastructure. It also supports Pakistan’s goal of producing homegrown space systems that directly contribute to planning, governance, and resource management.

In my opinion the successful launch of EO-2 demonstrates Pakistan’s growing technological independence in space research. It also positions the country to make more informed decisions using domestic satellite data, enhancing scientific, economic, and strategic planning. This milestone reflects both the skill of SUPARCO’s engineers and the potential for continued growth in Pakistan’s space program.
