demarche to Norway

Web Desk: Pakistan has issued a formal demarche to Norway after the Norwegian ambassador attended a Supreme Court hearing linked to activist Iman Mazari today. Officials said the diplomat’s presence at the 11 November 2025 proceedings amounted to interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs.

Citing the Vienna Convention

In the communication, authorities said the attendance violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. They referenced Article 41, which requires diplomats to respect the laws of the host country and refrain from involvement in domestic matters. Officials said the incident raised concerns about respect for diplomatic norms.

Pattern of Concern Reported

Pakistan noted that this was not an isolated incident. According to the demarche, authorities have observed what they described as a broader pattern in which Norwegian organisations support groups viewed by Islamabad as hostile to the state. They said such activity has heightened sensitivities around ongoing legal proceedings involving individuals accused of anti-state actions.

Warning to Diplomatic Corps

Government officials stressed that court cases related to national security and internal stability are highly sensitive. As a result, they said any link between foreign diplomats and individuals facing such accusations is unacceptable. The note warned that Pakistan would not tolerate actions it interprets as undermining state authority.

Call for Mutual Respect

Pakistan said it respects Norway’s sovereignty and expects reciprocal respect for its own. The communication urged Norway to observe its obligations under the Vienna Convention and to adhere to standard diplomatic protocol. Officials added that they expect Norway to avoid actions that could be construed as interference in domestic affairs.
