Web Desk: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority officially issued 5G licenses to Jazz, Zong, and Ufone on Thursday. This move signals the start of next-generation connectivity across the country. The regulator awarded these licenses during a ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House. A successful spectrum auction recently generated approximately $510 million for the national treasury. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the event and called the development a major milestone for the digital economy.

The licenses allow for immediate deployment, but the PTA confirmed that services will launch in stages. Initial 5G coverage will focus on metropolitan hubs and urban centers before expanding nationwide. Jazz has already activated 5G at roughly 180 sites. These sites cover Islamabad, all provincial capitals, and cities like Faisalabad and Multan. Zong announced a commercial launch across 16 cities, including Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Lahore. The company plans to upgrade over 1,000 sites this year. Ufone expects to begin its rollout in the coming days using its share in the 3500 MHz band.

The PTA noted that users must own 5G-compatible handsets to access the new network. Customers should also ensure their mobile software is fully updated. Cellular companies will publish lists of specific coverage areas on their websites. Officials also stated that the new spectrum will improve existing 4G services. This advancement helps Pakistan bridge the digital divide and empowers the youth through better technology.
