NDMA issues weather alert for Punjab, KP, GB and Kashmir

The National Emergency Operations Center of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert regarding the expected weather situation and possible hazards in various areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir over the next 12 to 24 hours.


According to the alert, there is a possibility of rain with thunderstorms in several districts of Punjab including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Jhelum, Gujar Khan, and Sialkot.


In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain with thunderstorms is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Swabi, Kalam, Mingora, Malakand, Battagram, Mardan, Nowshera, Peshawar, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Charsadda, Kohat, Karak, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan.


In Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, there is a chance of rain with thunderstorms in Skardu, Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Diamer, Ghanche, Astore, Shigar, Kharmang, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Kotli, Poonch, and Bhimber.


During the next 12 to 24 hours, hailstorms are also expected in various areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Due to hail and strong winds, there is a risk of damage to weak structures and installations.


According to NDMA, in northern areas there is a possibility of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), landslides, and an increase in water flow in streams and rivers. In view of rain, flood-like situations, and landslides, there is also a risk of closure of connecting roads.


A severe risk of landslides has been identified in mountainous areas of Hunza, Nagar, Gilgit, Chilas, Astore, Shigar, Chitral, Kalam, Upper Kohistan, and Azad Kashmir. The connecting roads between Shimshal Valley, Attabad Lake, Karimabad, Gulmit, Shishkat Bala, and Passu have been declared highly sensitive.

According to NDMA, tourists and travelers have been advised to check weather and road conditions before traveling to northern areas. The public is also urged to get timely updates through NDMA’s official app, Pak NDMA Disaster Alert. NDMA has instructed all provincial and district authorities to remain on alert to deal with any possible weather situation.
