Web Desk: Football’s global governing body FIFA has announced details of the first-ever FIFA ASEAN Cup, a new international tournament designed to promote football and strengthen sporting ties across Southeast Asia.
The inaugural competition will run from Sept. 24 to Oct. 5 and will bring together 14 national teams, including all 11 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and three invited sides from outside the regional bloc.
Pakistan is among the guest teams selected to take part in the historic tournament.
Indonesia and Hong Kong, China, will jointly stage the competition, with matches scheduled to take place in Jakarta and Bandung in Indonesia as well as at venues in Hong Kong.
The host cities have been selected to provide the tournament with established football environments and facilities capable of accommodating international competition.
The event is also expected to give supporters an opportunity to watch teams from across the wider Asian region compete on the same platform.
The tournament will feature the 11 ASEAN member nations alongside three invited teams, creating a 14-team field.
FIFA says the competition is intended to expand opportunities for international football in a region where national sides have often had limited exposure to major tournaments.
Moreover, bringing teams from outside Southeast Asia into the competition could provide additional opportunities for players and coaches to gain experience against different styles of football.
Football enjoys a strong following across Southeast Asia, but teams in the region have traditionally faced limited opportunities to compete regularly in high-profile international events.
The new FIFA tournament seeks to address that gap by creating another competitive platform while encouraging stronger sporting links between participating nations.
With teams from ASEAN and invited countries sharing the same competition, the tournament could also help expose emerging players to higher levels of international football.
Pakistan’s inclusion gives the national side an opportunity to compete against teams from Southeast Asia while gaining valuable international experience.
The tournament will also place Pakistan in a broader regional football setting, offering players and coaches the chance to test themselves against unfamiliar opponents.
With Jakarta, Bandung and Hong Kong providing the venues, FIFA’s inaugural ASEAN Cup is set to mark a new chapter in regional football and could help create further opportunities for the sport’s development across Asia.
