Can fake currency notes be identified just by looking at their serial numbers? Authorities reveal the truth?

Some posts circulating on social media are claiming that citizens can identify fake currency notes merely by checking their serial numbers.

These viral posts had caused concern among the public, but authorities have now clarified how much truth there is to this claim.

What did the social media post claim?

On January 27, a Facebook account shared images of Pakistani currency notes of 500, 1000, and 5000 rupees.

The post claimed that fake notes can be identified through the initial letters of their serial numbers. According to the claim:

A 500-rupee note with the serial prefix “AF”

A 1000-rupee note with the serial prefix “CE”

A 5000-rupee note with the serial prefix “HO”

What is the reality?

A representative of the State Bank of Pakistan that the claims made in these social media posts are false and baseless.

The representative said that the public should only rely on information and press releases available on the central bank’s official website and verified social media accounts.

Authorities also reviewed the official website and verified social media accounts of the State Bank of Pakistan, but no such guideline regarding identifying fake currency notes through serial numbers was found there.
