Skardu: Work has begun on an expansion project to transform Skardu International Airport into a modern air gateway for tourists.
According to a spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), the project is intended to boost tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan while providing passengers with modern and improved travel facilities. Construction is currently in its initial phase, with line marking work underway.
Under the expansion plan, the terminal building will be enlarged from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet. The departure lounge capacity will increase from 300 to 900 passengers, while the arrival lounge capacity will be expanded from 80 to 200 passengers. Executive lounges will also be added to both the departure and arrival areas.
The number of check-in and briefing counters will be increased from 6 to 10, while parking capacity will be expanded from 200 to 600 vehicles. In addition, a modern cargo office block will be constructed to further enhance the airport’s operational capacity.
The spokesperson said that upon completion, the expansion project will provide tourists and other passengers with modern, improved travel facilities and help promote tourism, economic activity, and air connectivity in Gilgit-Baltistan.
