Another incident involving the harassment of a journalist by supporters of Maulana Fazlur Rehman has emerged following the incident involving an Azaad Digital reporter. The journalist community appears to be increasingly targeted, with further incidents of journalists being harassed over their reporting. A P Connect journalist has also reportedly been subjected to harassment.
A serious incident involving assault and harassment of prominent P Connect journalist Idrees Abbasi by supporters of Maulana Fazlur Rehman has come to light after he sought to expose the truth about the JUI-F chief’s overseas assets and activities. Following the incident involving an Azaad Digital journalist, Idrees Abbasi has now reportedly been targeted, raising concerns about the treatment of journalists by the Maulana’s supporters.
When journalist Idrees Abbasi raised questions about Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s policies and overseas assets, his supporters reacted aggressively and subjected him to severe harassment. According to the report, speaking the truth and bringing facts to light have effectively become offences in the eyes of Maulana Fazlur Rehman and his supporters, with journalists facing intimidation over their reporting.
The latest incident involving Idrees Abbasi has raised further concerns about the use of intimidation tactics amid questions surrounding properties reportedly held in Gulf countries.
Journalist organisations have strongly condemned the assault on Idrees Abbasi, describing it as a direct attack on press freedom. They have demanded that the government put an end to what they termed the supporters’ reign of intimidation and take immediate and strict legal action against those involved.
