Govt issues NCCIA rules 2025, new powers granted to tackle cybercrime

WEBDESK: The federal government has issued the gazette notification for the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Functional Rules 2025, giving the agency new powers to act against cybercrime.

According to the notification, NCCIA will now have the authority to freeze bank accounts as well as movable and immovable properties linked to cybercrime cases.

The rules also provide for the establishment of new specialised units. These include an Accountability Unit, a Digital Forensic Unit, a Media Unit, a Research and Development Unit, and an OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence) Unit.

Officials said the new structure will make prosecution more effective and swift. Transparency in investigations and punishments will also be improved through media oversight.

The government believes the updated functional rules will help strengthen the fight against cybercrime and ensure better protection for citizens in the digital sphere.
