National cricketer under PCB investigation after failing dope test

Web Desk: Pakistan left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz has tested positive for a recreational drug during the T20 World Cup 2026, prompting the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to launch a formal investigation, officials said.

According to initial information, the result emerged from a sample collected during the tournament jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, where Pakistan failed to progress beyond the Super Eight stage. Nawaz featured in all seven matches of the campaign.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) reportedly informed the PCB of the adverse finding, after which the board initiated its disciplinary process under anti-doping regulations.

A PCB spokesperson confirmed that the board has begun its formal due process and will share its findings with the international governing body shortly.

However, neither the ICC nor Surrey County Cricket Club commented when approached for a response regarding the development.

The case has already impacted Nawaz’s franchise prospects in England. Surrey had planned to announce his signing for the T20 Blast, but the deal has now fallen through following the doping report.

The PCB had only recently issued a no-objection certificate allowing him to participate in the English domestic competition scheduled from May to July.

Despite the investigation, Nawaz remains active in domestic cricket. He is currently playing for Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League, where he recently bowled three wicketless overs in a six-wicket win over Rawalpindi.

Sources indicate that Nawaz has disputed the initial findings and requested analysis of the B sample, a standard procedure under anti-doping rules. The outcome of the second test is expected later this month and could determine his future in international cricket.

If confirmed, the result may lead to disciplinary action under ICC anti-doping regulations, potentially sidelining the 32-year-old all-rounder from competitive cricket.
