Indus water flow crosses 400,000 cusecs at Guddu Barrage

WEBDESK: The water level in the Indus River has risen sharply, with the flow at Guddu Barrage crossing 401,000 cusecs, officials confirmed on Monday.

According to the barrage control room, the inflow at Guddu has reached 401,626 cusecs, while the outflow stands at 380,896 cusecs. The water flow increased by over 10,900 cusecs in the past 24 hours.

At Sukkur Barrage, the inflow has been recorded at 340,000 cusecs, with an outflow of 311,000 cusecs. Meanwhile, the Kotri Barrage downstream is experiencing a low flood, with an inflow of 236,000 cusecs and an outflow of 231,000 cusecs.

The Flood Forecasting Division also reported that the water level at Punjnad headworks has surged to 564,000 cusecs.

Flooding has already caused devastation in Punjab, where rivers Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi are in exceptionally high flood. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned that water levels could rise further by 9 September.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said the peak flood of the Indus has been delayed and is now expected to reach Guddu Barrage on 9 September, with flows possibly surpassing 800,000 cusecs.

Speaking at the Flood Emergency Centre in Karachi, he said evacuation efforts have been accelerated in vulnerable riverside areas. He also confirmed that provincial ministers are stationed on both banks of the Indus to supervise the evacuations.
