Aga Khan University to open Islamabad campus after CDA approves land

WEBDESK: The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is set to establish a full campus in Islamabad after the Capital Development Authority (CDA) approved 22 acres of prime land on a major city highway. The approval follows directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The CDA Board meeting, chaired by Muhammad Ali Randhawa, formally cleared the project this week. Officials said the location is highly accessible and visible, making it a landmark addition to Islamabad’s healthcare landscape.

AKU President Sulaiman Shahabuddin confirmed the development, saying the site is excellent for a teaching and healthcare facility. He added that the Prime Minister is fully supporting AKU’s expansion into the capital.

Shahabuddin said the Islamabad campus will serve not only the federal capital but also Northern Pakistan, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. A detailed feasibility study will precede construction.

The Islamabad campus is part of AKU’s five-year strategic plan, prioritising Islamabad and Lahore for expansion. AKU has already invested more than $2.2 billion in education and healthcare across Pakistan and internationally.

Since its founding, AKU has introduced Pakistan’s first private university and the first School of Nursing. More than 80 nursing schools nationwide are led by AKU trained professionals, and its health sciences programme ranks among the top 100 globally.

The new campus will feature a teaching hospital, research facilities, and training programmes for doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals. Experts say it will ease the burden on government hospitals like PIMS and Polyclinic while setting new standards for medical education and healthcare.

Shahabuddin emphasised that the project is not just about a hospital but about strengthening the entire healthcare system through education, training, and research.
