Argentina continues to face intense global criticism even after the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to its aggressive style of play, poor sportsmanship and controversial conduct.
Following a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the final, critics labeled Argentina the tournament’s “villain.”
Numerous fouls, clashes between players during the final, and Argentina’s players turning their backs while Spain received the World Cup trophy have all become major reasons for the criticism.

The New York Times described Argentina’s performance as “ill-tempered, childish and unpleasant,” while former German footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger called the team “extremely unprofessional.”
British television personality Piers Morgan said Argentina’s players appeared intent on targeting as many Spanish players as possible.
Throughout the tournament, Argentina was also accused of receiving unusual advantages from refereeing decisions. Despite Lionel Messi’s global popularity, negative sentiment toward the team continued to grow.
On the other hand, many people in Argentina rejected the criticism, saying their team simply plays with passion.
Buenos Aires lawyer Leo Simone said people mistake their pride for arrogance, adding that tough physical football is a normal part of the South American game.
Football analyst Ezequiel Fernández Moores also said Argentina’s sarcastic and provocative style is part of the country’s football culture, but the rest of the world does not see it the same way. However, he acknowledged that turning their backs during Spain’s trophy ceremony was wrong.
Branded as bullies by British media after defeat to Spain
During the World Cup, some Argentine fans and players also faced allegations of racist behavior.
American actor Samuel L. Jackson described Argentina as one of the “most racist countries” in the world and urged Black people not to support the team.
On the other hand, experts in social relations said that racist incidents in football should not be regarded as representative of Argentine society as a whole.
