After five seasons, Stranger Things is ending. However, the story isn’t over. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have a spin-off in development. “It’s early days but we’re excited about it,” says Matt Duffer. It will feature new characters and a new mystery but stay in the same world.
The original story is complete. Ross says, “It’s the end for these characters.” The creators planned the final scene of the series from the start. Matt calls it their “north star.” Season five takes place in autumn 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the Rifts. The friends must stop Vecna. The town faces military quarantine and eleven is hunted.
The Duffer brothers always planned four or five seasons. It still feels surreal they reached this point. Ross says, “When you’re making the show, you forget how far it’s come.” Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington, recalls saying goodbye after season one. He didn’t know if he’d see anyone again. Season one felt like an indie film. Now, it’s a big-budget hit.
Filming the final season took a year. The cast formed strong friendships. Natalia Dyer says their off-screen bonds mirror their characters. Charlie Heaton agrees, saying the show changed their lives forever.
There were reports of tension. Millie Bobby Brown reportedly filed a claim against David Harbour. The cast insists friendships stayed strong. Ross says they protected the younger actors. Finn Wolfhard faced challenges growing up in the spotlight. Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo agree.
The cast feels nervous about moving on. Gaten calls it “a bit of anxiety.” Dustin, played by Gaten, says twenties are for growth and change. Caleb hopes the show remains timeless.
Netflix has an animated follow-up. The live-action spin-off remains secret. Season five premieres 26 November in the US, with the finale on New Year’s Eve. In the UK, it comes a day later. The era ends, but the Stranger Things world continues.
