Winter gas supply plan finalized as shortages loom

As winter approaches, winter gas supply plan for domestic users has been finalized and uninterrupted gas supply from fields in the country’s northern regions would be ensured.

With winter approaching, concerns are growing among households over possible gas shortages and load management across the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting on winter gas management to review the government’s supply plan for the coming months.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahad Cheema, Ali Pervaiz Malik and other officials attended the meeting.

The prime minister directed authorities to prepare a comprehensive gas load management strategy in advance and give domestic consumers priority in the supply of locally produced gas.

He also instructed the relevant departments to launch a public awareness campaign about the winter gas management plan and ensure uninterrupted gas imports despite regional energy challenges.

Officials told the meeting that imported RLNG would be prioritised for power generation and industries, while alternative energy options would be promoted for household use.

The government was also briefed that uninterrupted gas supply from fields in the country’s northern regions would be ensured.

A proposal to provide bank financing for alternative water and space-heating solutions is also under consideration.

Officials further said the government is working on an LNG import plan for the period from December to February.

Gas companies and the Petroleum Division have reportedly requested at least 22 LNG cargoes for the winter season, while the energy task force is considering around 10 to 12 cargoes on a best-effort basis due to possible disruptions in regional energy supply routes.

The shortage usually becomes more severe during winter as demand rises.
