Web Desk: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, with regional security and efforts to strengthen international peace at the centre of discussions.
The meeting brought together senior Pakistani military leadership and the UN chief as both sides reviewed developments affecting regional stability and broader international security.
During the meeting, Guterres and Munir exchanged views on a range of issues of mutual interest, including the evolving security situation in the region and the United Nations’ role in preventing conflicts and promoting peace.
The discussions also covered the longstanding Jammu and Kashmir dispute, India’s decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance and security threats linked to terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.
The issues come amid continuing regional tensions and concerns over cross-border security, making regional stability a key part of the talks.
Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and security and highlighted the country’s longstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.
He also praised the United Nations for its efforts under Guterres’ leadership to advance peace, stability and humanitarian cooperation around the world.
Pakistan remains one of the countries that has contributed personnel to UN peacekeeping missions, with its armed forces playing a role in international efforts to maintain peace in conflict-affected regions.
Guterres, in turn, acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistan and its armed forces in the fight against terrorism and in UN peacekeeping missions.
The UN secretary-general also recognized Pakistan’s continued support for international peace and security, according to the information released after the meeting.
In particular, Guterres appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to pursue peaceful solutions to regional conflicts, underscoring the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in addressing disputes.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss Pakistan’s security concerns while reaffirming the broader importance of international cooperation in addressing regional and global challenges.
