Web Desk: In recent years what has become one of the deadliest natural disaster, severe flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka have resulted in at least 618 confirmed deaths and more than 200 people remain missing, as per official updates on Monday. The rains of mosoon triggered by the after math of Tropical storm Datwa have worsened condition across multiple districts.
According to authorities that search and rescue teams, supported by military units, have been working around the clock to reach remote and badly affected areas. Several villages remain disconnected due to collapsed roads, swollen rivers and ongoing earth slips.
Officials warned that the relentless monsoon rains may posture additional risks, potentially triggering new landslides in already fragile regions. As per report of Meteorological departments have predicted continued heavy rainfall over the next few days, raising further concern for vulnerable communities.
By international relief agencies the humanitarian assistance is being provided that have deployed emergency teams, food packs, medical supplies and temporary shelter materials. The urgent need for clean drinking water, sanitation facilities and trauma care for displaced families highlighted by aid organizations
Rescue teams have accelerated operations in the hardest-hit areas, including the central highlands and southwestern regions, where entire households have been swept away. Emergency workers are using helicopters, boats, and specialized equipment to evacuate survivors and recover bodies buried under debris. Despite the challenging conditions, authorities remain determined to continue search operations until all missing persons are accounted for.
The government has appealed to citizens to follow all the guidelines and move to safer locations immediately and also emphasized that adherence to safety advisories is essential to prevent further loss of life.
