Web desk: The Sindh Education Department announced that all public and private educational institutions in Karachi would remain closed on Thursday due to the situation caused by heavy rains in the city.
The department has announced holidays in schools and colleges. This announcement has been made for both private and government institutions.
The announcement comes at a time when the roads of the entire city are flooded, and the torrential rains persist.
The notification stated that the order covers all schools and colleges throughout the metropolis.
The death toll from rain-related incidents in Karachi climbed to 17 on Wednesday after the city endured intermittent showers since the previous day, followed by more monsoon rainfall at night.
Signs of Tuesday’s urban flooding were still evident, with damaged roads, stranded cars, and potholes affecting traffic on major routes.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded 178 millimetres of rain in Gulshan-e-Hadeed and 145 millimetres on University Road over the past 24 hours.
Drainage teams worked throughout the day to clear water from key roads, including Karsaz and Malir Halt, where several vehicles were stuck. Rainwater also flooded parts of the Old City Area, Aram Bagh, Sindh High Court, Liaquatabad, and University Road.
According to the PMD, strong monsoon currents from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are currently affecting southern Pakistan. More rainfall, with occasional heavy showers, is forecast for Karachi tomorrow, raising fears of renewed urban flooding.
Britain’s King Charles III has expressed deep sorrow over the destruction caused by flash floods in northern Pakistan.
In a message issued on Wednesday, the King extended condolences over the heavy losses from the severe weather and also expressed grief at the helicopter crash that killed relief workers.
He offered sympathy to the affected families and assured the people of Pakistan of his support during this difficult time, pledging assistance in their hour of need.
